Earthworks on the Sunshine Coast: Getting the Base Right

Dylan always says concrete is a lot like baking a cake…if you don’t get the base right, the whole thing won’t stand up.

And when it comes to concreting, especially here on the Sunshine Coast with our mix of sandy soils and reactive ground, the base is one of the most important steps in the entire process.

Why a Strong Concrete Base Matters

Industry standards for residential driveways specify a slab around 100mm thick, increasing to 150mm and beyond for loads over 5 tonnes.

(And here’s a fun fact: airport runways are roughly 600mm thick to handle the impact of landing aircraft!)

But even the thickest slab won’t perform well if the earth beneath it hasn’t been prepared properly.

Concrete always reflects whatever sits underneath. When the base is firm, level, and correctly compacted, your concrete has the best chance of staying stable and resisting movement — significantly reducing the risk of cracks.

However, if the soil is soft, uneven, or spongey (which is common across parts of the Sunshine Coast), the ground will naturally shift over time. This movement puts pressure on the slab and is one of the biggest causes of cracking and premature damage.

Our Sunshine Coast Concreting Point of Difference

We don’t just pour concrete… we assess the ground first.

Before any job starts, Dylan inspects the soil conditions and discusses the best preparation approach with you. No hidden costs. No last-minute changes. No expensive issues after the concrete is down.

Depending on your site, we may recommend one of the following:

  1. Digging Down & Rebuilding the Base

We excavate until we reach firm natural ground, then bring in road base and compact it in layers. This creates a stable, long-lasting foundation.

  1. Drilling Piers

Piers help us reach solid ground without major earthworks. They add strong point support beneath the slab… a smart option for challenging or reactive soils.

  1. Adding Footings

Footings deliver structural support exactly where the slab needs it and can minimise disruption to underground services.

Your Sunshine Coast Concrete Project Starts with a Solid Base

Before your concreting project begins, Dylan will take the time to walk you through the site conditions and outline the most reliable way forward. Our goal is simple: prevent hidden issues, avoid unwanted surprises, and ensure your concrete stands strong for years to come.
